How to create a special event about Climate Change

Open Sunday
On the 8th of January 2017, we, Climate activists, will organize an “Open Sunday”. What is that? It is an event in which we will bring you to the wonderful world of plants. They not only look beautiful and taste good, they also have amazing powers – contribute to both health and vitality! What has worked for hundreds of years does also work today. Its just out of fashion to use homemade remedies. Fortunately the knowledge has not been lost. It has been preserved for such a long time and its up to each and every one to use it. Why is it that important to have herbs and other plants around ones house? (This is an extract from the article we wrote to promote the event, 2017 December.)
On Sunday the Climate team had the second people’s exam. The event was divided into two parts: theoretical and practical.
Christopher welcomed the audience and introduced the concept of carbon footprint: every single day we inevitably leave a carbon footprint behind us because of shopping, travelling and eating. After that, the audience got a chance to hear a really emotional poem about trees.  Going further with Domenico’s presentation called “Reflections about trees”. He was leading us through the world of wonderful sayings. The one which moved me the most is as follows: The trees are the pillars of the world, when the last trees will be cut down, the sky will fall on us. (Native American Saying). We should not be ignorant about the things that our ancestors have noticed a long time ago, should we? In general, the presentation was spreading the positive energy and the audience burst into laughter several times, which is good. In order not to sound like “tree-huggers” we also prepared a presentation about a scientific investigation about trees. Elin and I concentrated on problems concerning trees, for example, haze in Southeast Asia.  Also, we gave some solutions, for example, Ecosia, a web search engine based in Berlin, Germany, which donates 80% of its surplus income to nonprofit conservationist organizations, with a current focus on tree planting, seed bombing and et cetera.
After that we had a break. As climate activists we prefer homemade food. Thus, we baked four different types of pies for our guests. From the smiles on their faces, we could say – mission accomplished!
The second part invited people to plant their own herbs, flowers. We prepared short descriptions including properties and uses of plants. It seemed that people were really interested in the action, because before planting they carefully read the label below the seeds. Everybody kept repeating that they are looking forward to see first sprouts!
Thank you for being a part of our special event!
