Lucia in Malawi - her first 2 months......

First Steps & Investigations

It has been a bit more than two months since me and my team arrived in Malawi and many stories and experiences have happened since then. My project is about being a core group teacher in a Teacher Training College. This means to support and guide a new group of students to success with their program while sharing lessons, courses and other experiences. The first days were all about getting settled and started in our new place and project. We did it quite fast and in the second week we already embarked on an investigation with our core groups (a group of 10 students) in the Dowa Teacher Training College, central region of Malawi.

The investigation was about understanding the challenges and difficulties of the primary education system in Malawi. This was a very profound experience for me from different angles but mostly because of facing the reality and the struggle of what really means to live in poverty and fight with the poor.  Many times I question the situation of Africa and other developing countries - I see it on TV and other media .  Butwhen you walk into a room with one hundred children all seated on the floor, with empty walls around, and just a humble blackboard to support the lessons...the overwhelming sensation is breathtaking.

Despite the latent cultural shock at the beginning, during the third week we were going fully into a longer camping investigation with local communities to deeper understand the conditions and challenges in the rural areas. We learned a lot from how people live in different areas when it comes to food, agriculture, health, culture and trade. This was a very good time to start feeling more deeply the African-Malawian life and getting hands on what it is later going to be our long bussing experience into other sub-Saharan African countries. Me and my team mate were separated

into different buses which was good in order to have a better interaction and integration with our students and the local people....
